The author of this memoir, Arthur Bear Chief, describes the sadistic physical, sexual, and psychological abuse he and other children suffered at Old Sun Residential School in Alberta, Canada, in the 1950s. Bear Chief recounts how he fought to cope with the after-effects of trauma as an adult, and details what happened when he later filed a claim against the Canadian government for compensation for the abuse. The book contains an afterword with details on legal precedents for reconciliation, on Canadian law firms involved in lawsuits by residential school litigants, and on the contexts and outcome of Bear Chiefâs case, plus appendices of court and legal correspondence related to Bear Chiefâs case. B&w photos from family collection are included. Distributed in the US by the University of Washington Press. In a series of chronological vignettes, Arthur Bear Chief depicts the punishment, cruelty, abuse, and injustice that he endured at Old Sun Residential School and then later relived in the traumatic process of retelling his story at an examination for discovery in connection with a lawsuit brought against the federal government. Late in life, he returned to Gleichen, Alberta on the Siksika nationâto the home left to him by his motherâand it was there that he began to reconnect with Blackfoot language and culture. Although the terrific adversity Bear Chief faced in his childhood made an indelible mark on his life, his unyielding spirit is evident throughout his story.
