Given the shifts in rural communities over the past several decades, Forest Community Connections is a timely book designed to cover an immense topic. The scope makes it difficult to address the full range and depth of the issues in just one volume. After an introductory chapter, the volume is divided into three parts: methods for community data collection, analysis, and assessment; current management issues; and the link between communities and governance structures. The editing has produced an uneven book. Although chapters are written by researchers well known in their disciplines, some authors have covered the same material elsewhere, at times with more convincing detail and evidence. The apparent free hand given to contributors results in a repetition of the history of US forest policy, covered first in chapter 1 and again in several other chapters. The depth and detail of topics vary from chapter to chapter, with some providing more of an overview for readers new to the subject. Other chapters assume readers have a prior background in and understanding of the discipline. Many chapters can serve as stand-alone readings and would be valuable in upper-level undergraduate and graduate policy classes. Summing Up: Recommended. Only upper-division undergraduate through professional libraries with an emphasis on land use policy. Copyright 2009 American Library Association.
