- Book News : Book News Reviews
The author answers 43 common questions teens might have about obesity in terms of why and how it develops, whether or not it is dangerous to be obese, and what can happen as a result of repeated dieting to try to lose weight. She addresses common myths associated with obesity, then questions related to definitions, causes and risk factors, consequences, treatment options, and social stigma, acceptance, and the prevention of obesity, ending with case vignettes that illustrate common scenarios associated with obesity. The book also includes a guide to health literacy. Annotation ©2019 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com) - Choice Reviews : Choice Reviews 2019 August
This latest volume of Greenwood's "Q&A Heath Guides" series provides a structured set of questions and answers related to obesity, including definitions, causes, prevention, and treatment while also addressing social issues of stigma and discrimination. It primarily targets young adults but may also interest parents and general readers. Although boasting "easy to understand" language, much of the text appears to be above an eighth-grade reading level. A comparable health information book series, "100 Questions & Answers," published by Jones & Bartlett Learning, is well known for providing plain-language health information guides and may be an appropriate alternative. However, the closest title in that seriesâ100 Questions & Answers About Your Child's Obesity, by Barton Cobert and Josiane Cobert (2010)âfocuses on childhood obesity, so the volume under review provides a complementary perspective for young adults. Of particular interest is the inclusion of five real-world case studies that could be used for classroom discussion. This guide is an appropriate addition to consumer health collections in public and academic libraries and could be used by undergraduate students for discussion and study. Summing Up: Recommended. Undergraduates and general readers.
