The central thesis of this book is that wildland fire has always been common in Canada, but that neither the federal government nor Canadian culture has acknowledged its role and presence. In his introduction, Struzik (Queen's Univ., Univ. of Waterloo) speaks for himself and Canada as he describes growing up Canadian, in a country without awareness of how wildfire is a significant risk to people and the economy. The next 26 chapters offer a well-researched and spectacularly illustrated profile of historically significant wildfires in North America between 1780 and 2021. Struzik focuses on catastrophic fires in Canada, but he covers many in the US, and includes analyses of fire effects and lessons learned. Canadian fire policy followed the US in suppressing fires until the late 1980s. Fuel reduction became a favored tool as megafires presented increasing danger. Chapter 26 changes pace, focusing on the role of Canadian news media in framing the country's response to wildfire, which became a public issue in the 20th century. In his conclusion Struzik calls for cultural and political efforts devoted to actively living with wildfire rather than addressing it on an as-needed basis. The book is valuable for comparing the role of, and policies toward, wildfire in the US. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers.
