Climate change education : an Earth Institute sustainability primer / Cassie Xu and Radhika Iyengar.

Xu, Cassie, (author.). Iyengar, Radhika, (author.).

Summary:

"Once primarily the domain of climate scientists, the impacts of climate change on humans and environmental systems have become a focus for professionals in many different industries, from education to finance and insurance to construction. Many attempts to educate learners about climate change have relied on scare tactics to generate fear, but that approach can backfire and actually inhibit learners. Instead, we need to rethink our approach to climate change education and provide learners with academic reasoning, structure, and systems thinking in order for them to be able to contextualize climate change within their worlds. This book explores the critical need for climate change education and argues that the teaching and learning of climate change will be essential to addressing the complex environmental and social problems we are facing. This book presents a synthesis of what we know as effective pedagogy and practice in climate change education. It is grounded in teaching and learning through a systems approach and uses this as the foundation to address how we can develop stronger practices for interdisciplinary climate change education efforts. The book also explores the need for climate change education to be integrated into all levels of education because all industries will be impacted by climate change, and there is a strong need to prepare and train future workforces to have a basic level of understanding of climate science and the physical and social impacts of changing climate. Lastly, will shares examples of effective climate change education efforts across different levels and learning environments, which will provide practitioners with evidence-based tools and practices for implementation purposes"-- Provided by publisher.
