First nations : race, class and gender relations

Satzewich, Vic 1961- (Author). Wotherspoon, Terry. (Added Author).

Summary: Canadian social life and public policy are becoming increasingly influenced by Aboriginal people, their roles in Canadian society and the issues that concern them. What is the relationship between First Nations, other Aboriginal people, and non-Aboriginal Canadians? What places do Aboriginal people occupy within Canadian society, and how are these circumstances related to Aboriginal people's dreams and aspirations? How did these circumstances come about, how are they changing, and what are the future prospects for the achievement of self-government and meaningful new relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Canadians? A growing body of academic, policy, and popular literature has emerged to address some aspects of these questions, especially since the inital publication of First Nations: Race, Class, and Gender Relations. However this book remains unique in offering systematically, from a political economy perspective, an analysis that enables us to understand the diverse realities of Aboriginal people within changing Canadian and global contexts...This book provides an extended analysis of how changing social dynamics, organized particularly around race, class, and gender relations, have shaped the life chances and conditions for Aboriginal people within the structure of Canadian society and its major institutional forms.
